About Teen Pregnancy Today

Teen pregnancy is one problem teens today seem to be getting themselves into.

Teen pregnancy is the highest it has ever been. Most teens struggle to support

their new born either as a single parent or someone who has support and is getting

help from the father and families. Teen pregnancy happens to be the biggest teen

issue boys and girls are having. Possibly half of teen fathers leave before or soon

after their new born is born. Please, read on as I share more information about teen

pregnancy issues.

Facts About Teen Pregnancy

The U.S. has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the industrialized world ("Do

Something"). Over the years this is sad but true. Some parents believe this is

because of the new show that had come out in the past year called “16 &

Pregnant”. Nearly four in ten teenage girls whose first intercourse experience

happened at 13 or 14 report that the sex was unwanted or involuntary

("TeenHelp.com"). Reports has actually stated that the show “16 & Pregnant” has

nothing to do with most teen pregnancies and that teens said that the helps them

see the struggles and either put off having sex or use protection. Black American

teenagers have the highest fertility rate of any teenage population group in the

entire world ("My Child Source"). Just because some teens may be able to support

their new born in many ways it doesn’t always end with a beautiful baby girl or boy

being handed back to the teen parents. Findings from ACOG show that one third of

teen pregnancies end in abortion ("Family Education"). Teen pregnancy varies from

age thirteen through nineteen years old but thirteen through sixteen seem to be the

highest. 11.7 percent of 15-year-old mothers had a low-birth weight baby in 2006

("March of Dimes"). This was because the baby was born to early; something went

wrong, plus many other things. Most teens that have babies drop out of school for

good if they do not have someone else to watch their child. The 470,000 who do

give birth will probably drop out of school, earn less than half than do those who

become mothers in their 20's, and go on welfare ("New York Times").

What You Should Know
Another problem facing teen mothers is the use of drugs and alcohol, including

cigarette smoking ("About.com Parenting & Family Pregnancy & Childbirth").

Another thing teen have issues with is using drugs which does affect the baby in

many different ways. Also about teen abortions is that some teen mothers have a

hard time deciding to either keep the baby or get rid of it. 11 percent of abortions

are obtained after 12 weeks of pregnancy; these later abortions are

disproportionately obtained by adolescents ("Body"). Among young women under

15 years old, 22 percent of all abortions are done in the second trimester compared

to 9 percent to women over 20 years old. ("Body").

Did You Know
Pregnant teens have a higher risk of getting high blood pressure -- called

pregnancy-induced hypertension -- than pregnant women in their 20s or 30s

("WebMD"). Having high blood pressure is not safe; it can also lead to other

serious things. These medical risks affect the pregnant teen, who may need to take

medications to control symptoms ("WebMD"). Some medications many also lead

to the baby birth being irregular. If this does happen the baby many have a chance

of having a disorder. A lot of teen girls have to support from family or the baby’s

father. This could lead to serious problem for that teen if they do decided to keep

the baby. Teenage girls who are pregnant -- especially if they don't have support

from their parents -- are at risk of not getting adequate prenatal care ("WebMD").

Reducing Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy is a serious problem and a lot of girls are placed in a hard

solution. Most teen girls will have to drop out of school meaning they education will

no longer be completed until their new born is taken care of. Most girls who do go

back to school have their parents to help them out. A lot of the boys who do help

with their new born are most likely to finish high school at least. Lastly, I hope that

teen pregnancy rate does go down and I also wish the best for those teens.
